French as a Second Language

The Language Centre proposes several certificates:

• French as a Second Language – beginner level (3 courses, 9 credits)
• French as a Second Language – functional level (5 courses, 15 credits)
• French as a Second Language – advanced level (5 courses, 15 credits)
• French as a Second Language – Language and culture (5 courses, 15 credits)
• French as a Second Language (10 courses, 30 credits)

The duration of a micro-program or certificate varies depending on the number of courses chosen for each semester. Knowledge of the language and courses available per semester also influence the length of a program.

There is no direct link to the French placement test. Ask:

• your faculty to register you, if you have been admitted to an undergraduate or graduate program (Bachelors, Masters, or PhD);
• the Language Centre, in other cases.

Once registered, you will receive an email with the link and instructions to take the test.

Exchange Students

As an exchange student, you pay tuition fees to your university.

This means you can take language courses during your exchange, if your university allows it.

If you want to improve your French-language skills before taking courses in your program, you can also study during two semesters as an exchange student and follow our intensive French immersion micro-program during the first semester. These courses do not need to be credited towards your program.

International Students

As a regular international student, you pay tuition fees to the Université de Sherbrooke.

You can sign up for our language courses by registering at études libres (in this case, courses do not lead to any degree), by crediting them towards your program (when possible), or by enrolling for one of our language programs.

Students completing a Bachelor, Masters, or PhD program can benefit from a tuition fee exemption for our French as a Second Language courses if their program requires them. French courses will not be credited towards your degree and will not influence your grade point average.
