Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities
UdeS 10th in research in Canada
Sherbrooke, le 07 décembre 2023 – A stream of research benefits have put UdeS in the top 10 of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities for 2023, an accomplishment that stems from the constantly renewed confidence of its funders and partners along with its visionary and highly industrious research community.
Together, all of its research disciplines are helping UdeS transform society through a plethora of highly useful studies and discoveries that are bearing fruit. This vitality in research has earned it an even higher ranking in Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities, which is published annually by Research Infosource.
The list ranks universities according to research income from governments and other partners in support of their scientific activities and includes researcher bursaries as well as research grants and contracts awarded by private companies, government agencies or non-profit organizations.
Ranked 10th for research revenue
Strong revenue is a reliable indicator of the quality of university research, as it attests to the level of confidence that investors and funding agencies have in the institution’s research teams. Revenue also indicates that the university has the necessary resources to train highly specialized students in areas deemed a priority.
For the 2021-2022 fiscal year, or the year used for this year’s rankings, UdeS jumped from 15th to 10th place, a historic result that is thanks to the entire research community.
“Our research plays a major role in advancing and developing communities in the Eastern Townships, Quebec and Canada. I want to thank our researchers, who work every day to push knowledge further and find solutions to society’s major challenges. I am also very grateful to the organizations that believe in our ability to innovate and that support our ideas,” said UdeS Rector Pierre Cossette with pride.
Over the past five years, UdeS has been ranked between 18th and 15th on this list.
First in growth
Beyond its highly enviable ranking, this year’s result confirms that UdeS has what it takes to continue innovating for the good of society.
Jean-Pierre Perreault, Vice-President, Research and Graduate Studies, added that “our talented research teams and cutting-edge infrastructure are a sign of quality for the stakeholders who invest in our work. We also innovate where needs are greatest, and this applicability makes our projects that much more attractive.”
With such a strong commitment from its community, it is no surprise that UdeS also came in first for research revenue growth.
This is the third time in five years that the Université de Sherbrooke has ranked first in Canada for growth in research revenue.
UdeS also stands out in the “5-Year Spotlights,” a category that highlights each university’s progress over a five-year period, as it earned a first-place ranking in revenue growth from international governments. This shows how the Université de Sherbrooke is considered a key player in international research.
A winning partnership approach
UdeS also came away with second place in the 5-Year Spotlights category for revenue from non-profit organizations, which confirms how UdeS is recognized for its desire to advance the innovation of organizations, from NPOs and SMEs to large corporations and municipalities.
This partnership approach is a well-recognized and highly appreciated component of the University’s Business Partnerships Group. “Our research ecosystem combines scientific excellence with excellence in partnerships and knowledge transfer. This collaborative environment grows from an interconnectedness across all UdeS disciplines. This approach provides many opportunities for experiential learning for our students that are also in line with the needs of organizations,” said Vincent Aimez, Vice-Rector, Development and Partnerships.
All signs point to the growing health of research at UdeS, which has everything in place to continue to position itself as a key player in research.
