Catherine Malboeuf-Hurtubise
C. Malboeuf-Hurtubise, child psychologist, FRQS J1 scholar and associate professor at Bishop's University (psychology), is an international leader in youth mental health, specifically in the use of the arts and existential/philosophical approaches as interventions to promote their well-being. She uses arts-based existential approaches to explore existential issues with children, and is particularly interested in themes of death and despair, especially in the context of the climate crisis. A specialist in children's well-being, she has expertise in self-determination theory and in implementing longitudinal and qualitative/mixed experimental designs to evaluate program effectiveness. She is a researcher at CRCHUS and the Observatoire pour l'Éducation et la Santé des Enfants (OPES). She holds several provincial and federal grants related to the well-being of children in schools, the use of the arts and existential approaches in mental health contexts (CIHR, SSHRC, FRQSC, CFI, Ministère de l'Éducation du Québec).
She has authored or co-authored over 70 scientific articles or book chapters on the impact of interventions (arts, philosophical dialogue, mindfulness) on the mental health of elementary school students. She is the instigator and director of the doctoral program in clinical psychology at Bishop's University. She also heads the ArtOrama research team on arts and culture in education, which brings together 17 researchers from 9 Quebec universities.
