CFP: Material Religion Special Issue on “Religion and Material Texts in the Americas”

The material bases of both religion and textual media have been sites of inquiry in the larger material turn across the humanities and social sciences. As scholars of material religion have demonstrated religion’s mediation through bodies, things, images, and spaces, at the same time, a diverse group of scholars has given renewed attention to the materiality of the book and other texts. Sometimes pursued under the names “material texts” or “critical bibliography,” an abundance of research has examined aspects of the production, circulation, and reception of inscriptions of all kinds—including (but not limited to) printed, manuscript, digital, and epigraphical media. Many new projects draw on the more established fields of book history and bibliography, especially in their use of object-based methods of analyzing physical qualities (such as paper, typography, binding, images, presswork, format, and provenance marks and other traces of use) as primary forms of evidence.

The deadline for abstracts (no more than 200 words please) is September 6, 2019. If accepted, the full 9000-word article will be due on December 1, 2019. The article, pending peer review, will be published alongside three other contributions on: Ojibwe- and Cree-language Bibles in Canada; the use of printed images among American Baptist missionaries to Burma; the sacramental properties of printed words in a Peruvian ceremonial volume.

Please submit abstracts to Sonia Hazard at shazard@fsu.edu.
