Intérêts de recherche
We study the plant innate immune system, with the long-term goal of applying this knowledge to the generation of disease resistant plants. Our research uses several model systems, including tobacco, tomato and Arabidopsis to study interactions between plants and pathogens, including viruses, viroids and bacteria. This includes the investigation of how plants recognize pathogens, the signaling molecules involved in disease resistance and ultimately, how plants eliminate pathogens. We also investigate how pathogens counteract plant defenses and manipulate the host environment for their own benefit.

The Mackey group is interested in how pathogens induce favourable microenvironments in the apoplast, with complementary interests to our own. We have exchanged extensively on methods to study water-soaking and isolation and analysis of apoplastic fluids. We are currently collaborating on a project to study the effects of ABA on nutrient mobilization to the apoplast and co-authoring a review on effector-triggered susceptibility and nutrient mobilization. We are also collaborating on a project to investigate factors involved in coronatine production in Pseudomonas syringae.

- Collaborator. France. Christophe Ritzenthaler, Université de Strasbourg/CNRS. The Ritzenthaler lab hosted master's student (Geneviève Clément) to learn a technique for the purification of viral dsRNA. Collaboration on the further development of this methodology.

- Collaborator. Mexico. Julio Vega-Arreguin, UNAM. Collaboration on the role of I2-like NB-LRR proteins in conferring resistance to Phytophthora capsici.
- Collaborator. China. Xiaorong Tao, Nanjing Agricultural University. Collaboration of the mechanism of action of the Sw-5 protein (NB-LRR conferring resistance to Tospoviruses). This collaboration was key to Dr. Tao recently being awarded a research grant from the Chinese government to work on this project. Funds from this grant cover travel costs for me to visit his lab in China.

- Collaborator. United States of America. Longstanding collaboration with Herman Scholthof, Texas A&M, starting when Dr. Scholthof performed a sabbatical in my lab. This work, focused on AGO protein function, has resulted in several publications, continual sharing of reagents, an internship in the Scholthof lab by a graduate student.

- Collaborator. Japan. KappeiKobayashi, Ehime University and Ken-Taro Sekine, Iwate Biotechnology Research Center. We and the Kobayashi/Sekine group have a common interest in I2-like NB-LRR proteins and using different members of the protein family, identified the same interacting protein (THF1). We have combined our results and shared reagents extensively to examine the role of THF1 in disease resistance.
