Guided Tours

On Monday October 21, 2024, you are invited for a guided tour on the Main Campus of the Université de Sherbrooke.

Here are the descriptions of the guided tours. On the registration form you will receive, we invite you to indicate your preferences among the three options below, as places are limited for some tours.

Guided Tour of the Institut Quantique's Research Platforms

Quantum sciences will produce technologies that will transform our society. The Institut quantique from the Université de Sherbrooke is at the center of a dynamic ecosystem that is accelerating this quantum revolution.

The major investment of the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) led to the creation of the Institut quantique in 2016, a research institute at the Université de Sherbrooke that focuses mainly on quantum science and technologies. We bring together experts in quantum materials, quantum information and quantum engineering to conduct high-quality fundamental research and develop the quantum technologies of the future.

Our institute has an experimental research and numerical computing infrastructure managed by a team of qualified technicians and research professionals. We offer a dynamic research environment including summer schools that attract students from around the world as well as weekly seminars and annual workshops on quantum materials, quantum information, mesoscopic physics or digital methods. Research at the Institut quantique is carried out in a spirit of collaboration reinforced by many solid collaboration with researchers from other countries.

Guided Tour of the Exhibition "Des arbres aux étoiles" / Galerie d'art Antoine-Sirois

For its sixtieth anniversary, the Galerie d'art Antoine-Sirois at the Université de Sherbrooke presents the exhibition Des arbres aux étoiles by SYLLAD, a duo formed by multidisciplinary artist Sylvie Rochette and photographic artist Ladislas Kadyszewski, highlighting the theme of the tree.

These artists, who have enjoyed long individual careers, have been working together since 2020, due to their complementary visions, values, sensibilities and interests in tackling themes that question our presence in the world. The tree is at the heart of their research, for its aesthetic and architectural qualities, its benefits, its resilience, its wisdom and its capacity to adapt. The tree is the main symbol of this multidisciplinary approach.

Through the common thread linking tree roots to the sky, the two artists attempt to perceive the organic link that unites the material and the immaterial, the anchored and the ethereal, the visible and the invisible. This omnipresent guiding thread in their art is represented by a sculptural form named RACIEL, a neologism derived from the contraction of the French terms “racine” (root) and “ciel” (sky). RACIEL are figures formed from branches of various types of wood and natural fibers, symbolizing the circulation of breath-of-life energy.

The exhibition is an installation that links trees and stars in a poetic and imaginative language. In a peaceful atmosphere, the artists share their vision of the world through uncluttered photography and minimal use of materials. Astrophotographs, sculptures in terracotta, cardboard and wood, and the staging of a small-scale canopy invite contemplation and reflection on our world. The power of the exhibition “Des arbres aux étoiles” lies in the quality and diversity of the works, and in the many levels of interpretation.

A virtual reality work adds to the experience. In addition, the unexpected and subtle collaboration of two renowned artists - multidisciplinary artist Carole Simard-Laflamme and artist Marie-Renée Otis, specialized in textile arts and embroidery - completes the exhibition. The exhibition Des arbres aux étoiles presents a major insight into SYLLAD's quest to artistically represent a vision of the world, and to create an experience in osmosis with that which is greater than oneself.

Guided Tour of the Plant and Environmental Sciences Research Complex

The CORSÈVE plant biology research complex was launched in May 2024. The complex is structured around high-performance greenhouses divided into six distinct zones with individually controlled climates that tailor the growing spaces to a wide variety of species.

It also houses an automated plant phenotyping device, the only one of its kind in Canada, that provides an abundance of plant data through a recurrent and non-destructive process.
